A couple of things:
Please remember to use spoiler space, and to be careful about spoilers. I know that a few people here have had books spoiled for them recently by careless commenting, and I've also had to edit two posts this morning to include more adequate spoiler space. It's not sufficient to type something like:
I thought this book was rather silly. (Spoiler: In the end, the protagonist, her husband, and their little budgie Chirpy are all crushed under the wheels of a train.) I can't see why this book was so popular. And that's not at all a very exaggerated example. You need to use spoiler space, and too much is better than too little, if you can't quite get the hang of it. The section of the FAQ that deals with spoilers begins here , and if you haven't read it, please do so as soon as possible.
Second: Sometimes links that we include in our posts have ridiculously long URLs (RLURLs). These mess up the screen, and for some users, completely screw up their browsers. If you need to include an RLURL, please use the following utility: TinyURL . You go to that site, paste the link into the field that's smack in the middle of the page, and it will generate a tiny URL that you can then copy and paste into your post here. This utility is invaluable not just for message boards but for e-mail, too; it will help keep you from sending RLURLs that get broken over two lines and then don't work in some e-mail programs, causing people to reply to you complaining that your link doesn't work. The TinyURL links never expire (although the pages they link to will still do whatever they would normally do, but you don't have to worry about your TinyURL). There's a link further down the page so you can drag the utility onto your links toolbar and have it handy all the time.
Any questions about this? Please post them here. Thank you.
Also, if any of you know other tips and utilities that are useful in the course of posting, feel free to share them here.

Deborah, are RLURLs okay if they are inside the UBB url tags?

miercoles - I can see a small problem with that, which is that, even inside tags, they get printed in full on the "today's active topics" page.

Yes, I think it's better to avoid them altogether wherever possible.

I love TinyURL. It's one of the most useful little utitilies to have ever come from the Internet.

Another site like TinyURL is makeashorterlink.com; works the same way.

I can see a small problem with that, which is that, even inside tags, they get printed in full on the "today's active topics" page. If someone felt that they had to include a link, would it be any better to treat it in the same manner as a spoiler and refrain from putting it near the beginning of a post? Am I correct if I assume the amount of each topic shown on the 'Today's Active Topics' screen is standard from browser to browser?

Yep. Daily, I use two to three different browsers. IE on a PC, and IE and Safari on a Mac. They all react differently to different parts of the forum, but the Today's Active Topics always displays the first 203 characters of a post.
The line wrap has worked for me in the Active Topics view -- I've never had a RLURL do the sideways scrolly thing there, that problem occurs in the posts/threads themselves. It's the RLURLs which are pasted into the post as plain text or with no link name that cause the problems. Have other people experienced this differently?

Listen, everyone, we're not kidding about using spoiler space. I had to ban someone (and not a new user, either) this morning for ignoring our constant reminders and instructions about using spoilers. Please, read the section in the FAQ (linked in my first post here) about spoilers if you haven't. If you've got questions, ask a moderator, or post them here. This isn't something you can be careless about around here. Thank you.

Hey all! We hope you're enjoying the new forums. We're pleased to announce a new feature that we think you'll like: spoiler tags!
What's a Spoiler Tag? Spoiler tags allow posters to cover information that might ruin a book / TV show / film for people who haven't read / seen it yet. The tags show up as a black bar over the text, like this: This is what a spoiler tag looks like. To read text covered with a spoiler tag, just highlight it with your cursor.
So, how do I use them? You have two options for inserting a spoiler tag. If you click the Reply option to any post, you'll see a Spoiler button on the toolbar. Click it to add spoiler tags to your message -- add your spoiler text between the tags. You can also type the tags in directly, using square brackets instead of the parentheses I'm using here: (spoiler) Text here (/spoiler).
Do I still need to include spoiler space at the beginning of my post? Spoiler tags will show up in Today's Active Topics, so if you are using spoiler tags in your post, you no longer have to worry about including spoiler space at the top of the post.
When do I need to include spoiler space? Please review our spoiler policy here. Keep in mind that this is the old FAQ courtesy of the WayBack Machine, so it's still talking about spoiler space rather than spoiler tags. (Want to read the entire FAQ? You can find it here.)
